ASP.Net Developer Salary Trends in South Africa

24 June 2026, by Josh Nel

ASP.NET is one of the most-used web frameworks in South Africa's tech ecosystem and one of the most used technologies overall, alongside C#. Here, we look at what ASP.NET developers earn at each stage of their careers, how that compares to average salaries for C# and JavaScript, and how earning potential differs between Johannesburg and Cape Town.

How much do ASP.NET developers earn by experience?

Junior ASP.NET developer salary

The job market for entry-level developers in 2026 looks very different from the one entry-level developers entered during the post-COVID tech boom.

Among companies sending interview requests to entry-level ASP.NET developers on OfferZen, the average salary is approximately R62,130 per month, with the middle 50% earning between R35,000 and R80,000.

This high starting salary is due to a major shift in the job market for entry-level developers over the past three years. During this time, demand for entry-level and junior developers has declined as companies have prioritised senior developers who could help move the needle in a challenging macroeconomic environment.

As a result, the bar for the remaining entry-level roles is significantly higher than it was previously. Many of the companies that are hiring at the entry-level are prioritising elite BSc Honours graduates from well-known and competitive university courses, and this is reflected in the starting salaries on offer.

For ASP.NET developers with two to four years of experience, the average drops slightly by 11.2% to R55,178. Salary plateaus at this career stage are not uncommon in 2026, but the drop for ASP.Net developers is one of the largest among widely used tools and technologies.

One contributor to this drop is due to many companies hiring for broader .NET skills over ASP.NET specialisation. That means that developers with strong C# and .NET fundamentals will be considered for these roles. As a result, this can lower demand for ASP.NET developers, particularly at the junior level.

Intermediate ASP.NET developer salary

Once they pass the four-to-six-year experience mark, ASP.NET developers see their salaries recover. At this stage of their careers, the average reaches R65,876, a 19.4% jump from the junior bracket.

By this point, ASP.NET developers have begun to establish themselves in enterprise environments, where the combination of the .NET ecosystem's depth and institutional knowledge allows them to command higher average salaries.

Senior ASP.NET developer salary

At the senior level, ASP.NET developers with six to ten years of experience see the average salary on OfferZen rise 17.2% to R77,179 per month.

After they've more than a decade of experience under their belts, the average climbs to R89,065, with top-quartile earners reaching R105,000.

As we'll see in the next section, these averages lag behind those for developers with comparable experience working with C# or straight JavaScript.

How do ASP.NET developer salaries compare to C# and JavaScript?

Here, we'll look at how average interview request salaries for ASP.NET developers compare to those of other widely used frontend languages and frameworks.

ASP.NET vs C#

C# developers consistently earn more than their ASP.NET counterparts across every experience level. At the entry level, C# developers earn about 6.1% more than their ASP.NET counterparts. That gap widens sharply at the two-to-four-year experience bracket, where C# developers earn 15.2% more.

However, the gap starts narrowing again from intermediate onward. At the four-to-six and six-to-ten year levels, C# earns around 4–5% more than ASP.NET, and about 5.7% more at the ten-plus year bracket.

For developers working in the Microsoft ecosystem, broadening from ASP.NET into C# more generally typically translates into stronger growth from the mid-career onward.

ASP.NET vs JavaScript

Average salaries for ASP.NET and JavaScript developers shift throughout their careers. At the entry level, ASP.NET developers earn about 7% more than JavaScript developers with similar experience.

That reverses at the two- to four-year mark, where JavaScript developers earn about 3.3% more. From the four-to-six-year level onward, ASP.NET regains its advantage, earning around 2–4% more than JavaScript through the intermediate and senior stages.

Do ASP.NET developers earn more in Cape Town or Johannesburg?

At the entry level, the gap between the two cities is modest, with Cape Town-based ASP.NET developers earning just 0.2% less than their Johannesburg-based counterparts. At the two-to-four stage, Cape Town narrowly overtakes the City of Gold with a 0.9% edge.

The gap between the country's two largest tech hubs is widest at the intermediate stage. ASP.NET developers with four to six years of experience, those based in the Mother City earn 7% more on average.

At the six-to-ten-year level, the gap narrows to 1.6%, then widens slightly to 1.9% for ASP.NET developers with more than a decade of experience.

What factors influence an ASP.NET developer's salary?

  • Broader .NET ecosystem breadth: Developers who combine ASP.NET experience with C#, Azure, Entity Framework, and related Microsoft tools tend to earn more, on average, and have more negotiating leverage.
  • Company size: ASP.NET is widely used throughout the South African tech ecosystem, largely due to Microsoft's dominance across many industries. ASP.NET developers in enterprise companies generally earn at the higher end of the ASP.NET range, as larger companies typically pay higher average salaries.
  • AI fluency: 35.5% of developers surveyed say AI fluency has positively affected their earning potential. For ASP.NET developers in enterprise environments, this is showing up as expectations around code generation, test automation, and the integration of AI capabilities into .NET applications.
  • City: Cape Town holds a slight advantage over Johannesburg for ASP.NET developers from the two-year mark onward. However, this advantage is very modest at most stages of their careers.

About the data

The insights in this article are based on OfferZen platform data and represent developers on the platform, not the entire industry.

OfferZen is a curated marketplace where we pre-screen candidates for quality. This means that the data from our platform will vary from other resources like our 2026 Salary and benefits report, which is based on survey responses from over 2400 South African developers from the country's tech community.

For this article, we've used data from ASP.NET developers' job descriptions and interview requests, with salaries stipulated upfront on the OfferZen platform over the past 12 months.

Our data shows that 79% of accepted offers on OfferZen match or exceed the salary listed in the job description or interview request. This makes the data a good representation (79% accurate) of the salaries at which developers are actually being placed.

Average salaries are single data points and only one part of a bigger story. Many respondents are expected to earn significantly more or less than these averages. However, we aim to provide a picture of underlying trends by mapping the average salaries for different experience levels.

These averages should not be used to estimate what your actual salary will or should be.

Salaries depend on the industry, the individual, benefits, and the nature of the work. These factors influence the salary a company will offer prospective hires. In addition, most developers are "fluent" in several languages, which will affect the final figures.

It's also important to remember that every individual's context is different. Ultimately, salary is a personal conversation that should take place between employee and employer.

On OfferZen, you can hire ASP.NET developers and find ASP.NET developer jobs.
